Tipalea Partners has been investing and creating jobs in Tasmania for over 15 years and has now acquired a significant development site from Bunnings in Stony Rise, Devonport.

The strong growth of Devonport is continuing to attract new investment and jobs to propel its progression into the future. Tipalea Partners is planning to develop a new $40 million neighbourhood retail centre by 2024.

Stony Rise Village is planned to be built on the 3.3-hectare land parcel, which is prominently located on the corner of Stony Rise Road and Friend Street, adjacent to the Devonport Homemaker Centre. Plans include a full-line supermarket of Coles of Woolworths, supported by convenience retail for the community’s everyday shopping needs, as well as a range of food outlets.

According to leading demographers, Location iQ, demand exists for another full line supermarket in Devonport: “A full line supermarket of over 3,000 square metres is generally required for every 8,000 to 10,000 people. The broader Devonport area population of almost 40,000 could support 4 to 5 supermarkets, however there are only 2 stores currently…”

The new shopping village is set to create around 200 jobs during construction and over 500 ongoing jobs once the centre opens. Tipalea Partners anticipates that construction can begin in 2023, after the necessary approvals are secured, and hopes to open the centre in 2024.

Plans for Stony Rise Village focus on providing retail uses that serve the daily needs of the growing residential population of Stony Rise, Miandetta and areas further south. The aim is to provide choice, convenience and significant amenity, without undermining the viability or vitality of existing retail in Devonport CBD. With an offer that compliments CBD retailers, the centre will take pressure off the existing Coles and Woolworths, which are currently over-trading, and will make the shopping experience at these centres more pleasant for the community.

Tipalea Partners believes that another full line supermarket in Devonport is desperately needed and this is the most appropriate site with convenient access from all directions. Modern, convenient retail is essential infrastructure for growing communities, such as Devonport.
