Tipalea acquired a prominent site in the Glebe Hill/Howrah region for a new neighbourhood shopping centre after its research identified a significant supermarket network gap in Hobart.
With a catchment of over 22,000 people within the Howrah growth corridor of southeast Hobart, Glebe Hill Village responds to this untapped demand and will provide a significant benefit for the growing area. There hasn’t been a supermarket-anchored neighbourhood shopping centre been developed metropolitan Hobart in over 10 years.
The 5,900m2 shopping centre is set to deliver a new standard of convenience in retail and consists of Coles plus 17 specialty shops in an air-conditioned mall with 260 car spaces in an expansive, completely on-grade car park. There’ll also be a 24/7 drive-through McDonald’s. We will offer a diverse tenancy mix targeted at meeting the needs of the local community, including a pharmacy, medical centre, butcher, bakery, nail salon, massage, hair and beauty, post office, along with a range of restaurants and takeaway options.
Glebe Hill Village is set to become Hobart’s most connected retail centre with a suite of innovative smart-tech features including its own app, free wireless phone charging and wi-fi, real-time air quality monitoring, smart bathrooms that monitor water usage, parcel lockers, recycling stations and EV chargers. The carpark will include three large canopies, with the underside transformed by a local Tasmanian artist. Read more about the public art component on the Glebe Hill Village website.
Construction began in May 2021 by local company, Fairbrother. Fairbrother is a leader in the industry and we really wanted to choose a local business for this project. Established in 1973 as a small, family-owned and operated business in Tasmania’s northwest, Fairbrother has steadily grown to become a recognised leader in the building and construction industry.
Glebe Hill Village is essential infrastructure for what is Hobart’s fastest growing catchment and will create about 200 jobs during construction and more than 350 ongoing jobs once the centre opens. We plan to open the centre in September 2022.
